This article explains how labels and lists work in PerkUp, and how to use them to target specific groups of people when sending rewards or setting up automations.

What are labels and lists?

A list is a named group of labels with a set of allowed values — for example, a "Department" list with values like Sales, Engineering, and Support. Each person in your Directory can carry labels from these lists, tagging them as Sales, a manager, remote, or whatever categories matter to your organization. You need admin access to create lists and assign labels.

How do I create a list and assign labels to people?

Go to your Directory, where you can create a new list, name it, and define its allowed values. Once a list exists, assign its labels to team members individually or in bulk from their directory profiles. If your organization syncs an HRIS, common labels like department, country, and employment type can be imported automatically as part of that sync, and any HRIS custom fields you enable will import too.

How do labels filter who receives a reward or automation?

When you're picking recipients for a reward or setting up an automation rule, you can filter by label instead of selecting people one by one. If you filter by multiple label groups at once (for example, Department and Location), a person must match all of those groups to be included. Within a single group, matching any one of the selected values is enough — so "Department: Sales OR Support" plus "Location: Remote" would only include remote people who are in Sales or Support. Leaving a filter empty means everyone is included for that group.

Can I use labels for both one-time rewards and recurring automations?

Yes. Label filters work the same way whether you're picking recipients for a one-time reward send or setting the recipient rules on a recurring automation, such as a birthday or work anniversary program. Set your label filters once on an automation rule, and every future match runs against your current directory — no need to re-select people each time.

What happens if I change a person's labels after an automation is already running?

Automations check label filters against a person's current labels each time the rule engine runs, so updating someone's labels changes who matches going forward. It does not affect rewards that have already been sent to them. If you need to review or adjust an automation's recipient filters after it's live, see "Editing a running automation or program."
